Today's Times of India carries a small news story about Viadeo acquiring apna circle, a networking site. Such acquisitions are daily occurrences. One thing I found funny was that apna circle was referred to as India's number 1 social and networking site. It's not even among the top 10.
According to a recent press release by comscore, Orkut is #1 and Facebook is a distant #2.
I still don't know how to insert a table on blogger or wud have certainly pasted the list.
Bharat Student dot Com is the biggest Indian social networking site with 3.3 million visitors in December 2008. Over half of internet users in India visit one or more social media sites.
Apna Circle may have a point though. They have an option for a separate social and professional profile, so it's kind of Facebook + Linked In rolled into one :) ... One expected a bit more innovation from Mr.Bhatia.
Social Networks are very brittle and as people tire of communities on Orkut and applications on Facebook I won't be surprised if Twitter makes an entry in the list within a year.
